Sold-Out Laps for Charity Generates $23,000 for Sonoma County Youth Groups
The Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children's Charities (SCC) hosted its 8th annual Laps for Charity fundraising event at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday March 21, generating $23,750 for the raceway's charitable arm.
Nearly 150 drivers of all experience levels attended the sold-out event and enjoyed a chance to pilot their own car for five lead-follow laps around the 2.52-mile, 12-turn road course. Additionally, participants received a pre-lap safety briefing with professional driving instructors. Each of the 15 sessions were divided up into groups of 10 cars each.
A wide variety of vehicles took to the track, ranging from Lamborghini and Tesla to vintage classics including a 1955 Chevrolet Pickup and 1965 Ford Mustang.
“This was quite an enjoyable event,” said Krunal Mange, who took to the road course in his 2018 Dodge Challenger. “I met some good people and saw some impressive cars. I will definitely keep an eye out for future Laps for Charity events.”
All proceeds benefit Sonoma County youth organizations through SCC, the charitable arm of Sonoma Raceway, which has distributed $6.8 million to Sonoma County youth groups since 2001.
Due to COVID-19 precautions, and to ensure the safety of the participants and the local communities, access to Laps for Charity was limited to participants and raceway personnel only. Spectators or additional riders were not be permitted. Participants followed raceway COVID-19 protocols while onsite, including social distancing, wearing a mask and frequent hand washing.
