This Earth Day, Sonoma Raceway proudly highlights its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship through a wide-ranging sustainability program designed to reduce its environmental footprint, conserve natural resources, and inspire positive change across the motorsports industry.

Nestled in the rolling hills of California’s wine country, Sonoma Raceway has become a national leader in sustainable sports venue operations. Through its comprehensive Sustainable Performance Program, the raceway continues to demonstrate that high-performance racing and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

“At Sonoma Raceway, we believe that protecting our planet is a responsibility we all share,” said Sonoma Raceway Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Flynn. “Earth Day serves as an opportunity to reflect on our progress and reaffirm our commitment to a more sustainable future.”

Powering the Future with Renewable Energy
A cornerstone of Sonoma Raceway’s sustainability efforts is its investment in clean energy. The facility features more than 1,600 solar panels, generating over 350 kilowatts of electricity—enough to supply approximately 41 percent of the raceway’s total energy needs. This large-scale solar installation significantly reduces reliance on traditional energy sources and lowers overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Innovative Recycling and Waste Diversion
Since launching its recycling program in 2004, Sonoma Raceway has diverted more than 700 tons of materials from landfills. During major events, the raceway partners with local organizations to recycle aluminum, glass, plastic, and mixed materials, while also safely processing used automotive fluids.

The raceway also embraces creative reuse initiatives—transforming retired race tires into safety barriers and repurposing banners and materials into new products through local partnerships, keeping valuable resources in circulation and out of waste streams.

Sustainable Land Management and Biodiversity
Sonoma Raceway takes a natural approach to land care across its more than 1,600-acre property. Thousands of sheep and cattle graze the landscape, providing eco-friendly vegetation management that reduces the need for fuel-powered equipment while supporting soil health and wildfire prevention.

In addition, the raceway supports local ecosystems by maintaining pollinator habitats, including on-site honeybee populations that contribute to biodiversity and environmental health.

Water Conservation and Resource Efficiency
Efforts to preserve water resources include the installation of low-flow fixtures throughout public facilities and ongoing groundwater studies to better utilize natural water sources. These initiatives help minimize water waste during high-attendance events while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Sustainable Infrastructure and Fan Experience
Sonoma Raceway integrates sustainability into the fan experience through environmentally responsible construction and amenities. Partnerships with certified sustainable lumber providers have resulted in shaded redwood decks and gathering spaces that enhance comfort while using responsibly sourced materials.

Additionally, composting programs and environmentally conscious food operations help reduce organic waste and support on-site gardening initiatives.

Driving Toward a Greener Future

Beyond facility operations, Sonoma Raceway serves as a platform for innovation in sustainable mobility. The venue has hosted events and showcases focused on energy efficiency and emerging technologies, reinforcing its role in shaping the future of transportation and motorsports.
