Ty Gibbs, driver of the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, will start Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) Toyota/Save Mart 350 on the pole after laying down a best lap time of 1:14.829 (95.738 mph) at Sonoma Raceway (SR). This marks Gibbs’ third career pole and first since 2024.
“The reruns are kind of just super weird here – sometimes you can go a lot faster, sometimes you don’t,” said Gibbs of telling crew chief Tyler Allen he needed to run another lap during qualifying. “I feel like I just had some more speed out there. I think the Camry is really fast this weekend, and we’re really excited to race it tomorrow.”
Starting alongside Gibbs on the front row will be Carson Hocevar, driver of the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet. Hocevar laid down a best lap time of 1:14.854 (95.706 mph).
“Being on the front row here is pretty cool,” said Hocevar. “Go back-to-back seconds? Hopefully that’s a good trend here. San Diego, we obviously had a shot, so we’ll see how it goes.”
California natives Kyle Larson (Elk Grove), AJ Allmendinger (Los Gatos) and Tyler Reddick (Corning) will start third, eighth and 11th respectively. Defending race winner Shane van Gisbergen will start sixth. Fastest in practice, Ryan Blaney will start 16th.
NASCAR’s In-Season Challenge is set with 32 NCS drivers competing in head-to-head matchups over five consecutive races, starting with Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350.
On-track action for SR’s tripleheader NASCAR weekend continues today with the Pit Boss/FoodMaxx 250 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (NOAPS) race (2:30 p.m. PT on The CW, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) with van Gisbergen on the pole in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet.
The weekend will culminate tomorrow with the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NCS race at 12:30 p.m. on TNT Sports, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
