It’s a racetrack, so naturally things move at a quick pace – which is why it’s no surprise that a lot has changed at Sonoma in just 34 days.
The excitement is building and there’s no shortage of NASCAR Cup Series drivers chomping at the bit to get back to Sonoma Raceway June 7-9 for race weekend in wine country. “The repave will allow for the drivers to go all-out, all the time,” says 2-time Toyota/Save Mart 350 winner Kyle Busch. Others, like long-time NASCAR Cup Series driver Austin Dillon, think the racing action will be something fans won’t want to miss, saying, “I think Turn 11 will see a lot of smoke! Gonna be an exciting race.”
On December 28, 2023 milling on the road course began and within just a few short weeks, the team at Bay Cities Paving & Grading rang in the new year by sealing and repairing cracks on the existing racing surface. A huge milestone was hit on January 29, exactly one month and a day after the project began, when teams finally began paving the first pass of a required three on the road course.
“Racing fans are in for a treat as this repave will create a more competitive, closer racing experience,” said Sonoma Raceway Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Flynn. “You’re going to have to be here to see it and believe it!”
