For the first time in series history, the Verizon IndyCar® Series championship will be decided on a road course, as the 2015 season comes to a close at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, Aug. 28-30, officials announced today.

The 11th annual Verizon IndyCar Series event at Sonoma Raceway will serve as the season finale for the 17-race 2015 schedule, marking the first time the wine country road course has concluded a major motor-sports series season. The IndyCar Series championship has come down to the last race each year since 2006, so a solid performance on the challenging circuit will be crucial for the 2015 champion.

"Our road course will be an outstanding venue to decide the series championship, and it will be a terrific way for our fans to wrap up the 2015 racing season in Sonoma," said Steve Page, Sonoma Raceway president and general manager. "We look forward to working with the folks at INDYCAR and Verizon to make this a championship event second to none."

Target Chip Ganassi's Scott Dixon posted his second Sonoma Raceway victory earlier this year, becoming just the second Verizon IndyCar Series driver to earn multiple wins on the 12-turn road course. Team Penske's Will Power has earned a reputation for dominance on the 12-turn road course with three Sonoma victories (2010, '11 and '13) and four pole positions.

"Sonoma has always been a great circuit for the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule, and I'm happy to hear we're continuing that relationship," said three-time series champion, Dixon. "People always ask what my favorite track is and I often say 'the last one I won at' so it's perfect for me and Team Target. It's a very technical and challenging track and the site of the biggest Target weekend each season from a partnership perspective. I'm looking forward to defending our win there in 2015."

The 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule features 17 race events, two new race venues and a total of six ABC and 13 NBCSN event broadcasts. The diverse calendar of events - which features six ovals, six road courses and four temporary street circuits - includes a total of 13 markets making a return to the calendar from 2014. All races will be broadcast on radio by the IMS Radio Network through its affiliates, including SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

"Sonoma will be an outstanding place to end the Verizon IndyCar Series season," said Power, the 2014 series champion. "It's an awesome venue with fans who really love our sport. Sonoma Raceway is one of my absolute favorite tracks and I'm really excited for the season to end there. I think it will be a good change of pace from the previous years."

Tickets for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma and all 2015 major events at Sonoma Raceway, including the Toyota/Save Mart 350 (June 26-28) and NHRA Sonoma Nationals (July 31-Aug. 2) go on sale to the general public on Nov. 17.
