Sonoma Raceway will host the 4th annual John's March Against Stomach Cancer on Saturday, Jan. 17 to support the battle against gastric cancer, one of the world's leading causes of cancer-related deaths.

The event is named in honor of John Cardinale, the raceway's longtime Vice President of Media and Community Relations, who passed away in 2013 after a two-year battle with the disease, becoming one of nearly 11,000 people who die from stomach cancer in the U.S. each year.

John's March offers a unique chance to raise funds for No Stomach For Cancer (www.nostomachforcancer.org) and enjoy a symbolic "march" around the raceway's 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. John's March has raised more than $40,000 over the past three years and is the only major fundraiser for gastric cancer on the West Coast.

At this year's event, the raceway will introduce a Memory Wall to honor those affected by stomach cancer. Participants are encouraged to bring pictures of loved ones affected by the disease to post on the wall.

"To be able to come together to support the fight against this terrible disease and to celebrate the spirit of people we loved is a privilege for which I am truly grateful," said Sacramento's Kathy Black, who attended the 2014 event. "We hope to come together every year to take time to remember and honor those we love."

The public can participate in the event for a suggested minimum donation of $40, which includes the walk/run around the 2.52-mile road course, a T-shirt and light refreshments following the march. New for 2015, 5K and 10K race distances will be marked with timers, for those who prefer a longer race distance. A shorter, less hilly course will also be available for those who do not wish to complete the 2.52 miles.

For the first time, advance registration is available for John's March. Go to www.nostomachforcancer.org/johnsmarch to sign-up in advance.

This is an all-inclusive event - children, pets, everyone is welcome (no scooters or skateboards are allowed on track). The raceway's Wine Country Winner's Circle will be available for pictures before/after the march.

No Stomach For Cancer is a non-profit group that works to increase awareness and education about stomach cancer, provide a support network for affected families and support research efforts for screening, early detection, treatment and prevention of stomach cancer.

Day-of registration begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, and the march begins at 9 a.m. Advance registration is not required; walk-ups are welcome and encouraged. Please note: only cash and checks will be accepted at the event, but credit cards are accepted in advance through the website.  Checks should be made payable to No Stomach For Cancer, Inc.
