From Historic Formula One Racing to the Latest Open Wheel Technology
The Indy® Grand Prix of Sonoma will feature top racers from the IZOD IndyCar® Series, but the weekend will also feature the best in open wheel racing from the Historic Grand Prix. Formula Car Challenge, World Challenge Series and the Star Mazda Championship.
Formula Car Challenge, presented by Goodyear
The Formula Car Challenge Series pairs with the IZOD IndyCar Series for the second straight year in Sonoma and will host a double-header race weekend. The Formula Car Challenge is a regionalized open wheel racing series with an annual national championship and enters its seventh season in 2011 (FormulaCarChallenge.com).
Historic Grand Prix
The Historic Grand Prix has been a crowd favorite over the years, as more than 20 vintage Formula One racecars (1966-1983) are typically featured. It’s a step back in time for open-wheel race fans. The Historic Grand Prix (historicgrandprix.com) will run its main event Sunday morning.
World Challenge Series
It will be a double-header weekend for the World Challenge, with 50-minute timed feature races set for Saturday and Sunday in all three classes: Grand Touring (GT), Grand Touring Sport (GTS) and Touring Car (TC). Fans can expect such makes as Toyota, Corvette, Cadillac and Porsche on the road course. This marks the World Challenge's first visit to Sonoma since 2006 (world-challenge.com).
Star Mazda Championship, presented by Goodyear
The Star Mazda Championship, presented by Goodyear, is making its first appearance at Infineon Raceway since 2005 and can count among its graduates INDYCAR drivers Marco Andretti, Graham Rahal and Raphael Matos, as well as former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star and Manteca native Scott Speed. The Star Mazda Championship will run its feature race on Saturday of race weekend (starmazda.com).
