FIA WTCC Joined by Three Support Series in Sonoma
The raceway in Sonoma will bring the fender-banging action of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) to the United States for the first time next weekend (Sept. 21-23), and the touring car series will be joined by three dynamic support series.
The WTCC, one of the four world championships ruled by the Fédèration International de l’Automobile, will take center stage during race weekend, featuring two 13-lap sprint races on Sunday, Sept. 23, that will include plenty of action. With limited time in each race, drivers will make active use of their fenders to reach the front of the field on the twisting road course.
The series, which will host 12 international events on the 2012 calendar, features some of the world’s best touring car racing with models from BMW, Chevrolet, SEAT and, new for 2012, Ford.
In addition to the FIA WTCC, race fans will enjoy the AutoGP World Series, Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC and US Touring Car Championship during race weekend. Here is a bit more information on these three series:
AutoGP World Series
The Auto GP World Series, a European formula racing series, will make its American debut alongside the FIA World Touring Car Championship. It will pair with the WTCC at each of its seven doubleheader race weekends, including the season finale in Sonoma. New for 2012, the series will introduce a mandatory pit stop in each race as well as an overboost system. Formula One driver Romain Grosjean came throughthe AutoGP ranks.
Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC
The Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC will bring furious Maserati competition to Sonoma Valley as the competitive spirit of gentlemen drivers from all over the world take over the Sonoma road course for the first time. The Maserati GranTurismo MC is the car used in the championship and will feature a new set up, new aerodynamic package and weight reduction, which will increase performance even further. Of note, actor Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy, will be one of the featured drivers racing in the Trofeo Maserati World Series in Sonoma, as will Guiness Book of World Records holder Greg Tracy..
United States Touring Car Championship
The USTCC is a professional road racing series comprised of late model sport compact sedans such as BMW 3 series, Mazdaspeed 3, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Honda Civic and others. The cars use slightly modified engines and highly modified suspensions with aerodynamic ground effects and sticky race tires. Twenty-eight of the 36 drivers competing are from Northern California.
